Water that Cleanses the Soul

Water and the act of being cleansed by it can bring feelings of rejuvenation and refreshment. Yesterday was one of those sweltering Sunday afternoons that have the ability to zap you of all of your energy. It was in the mid 90’s yesterday and there was virtually no breeze. My wife and I were feeling particularly deprived of energy yesterday because we hosted a 4th of July bash just 3 days ago where we had over 125 people in attendance.

Even though we knew that we would feel so much better if we could just muster up the strength to make it to the shower to cool off, accomplishing this feat was easier said than done. Finally, Sam courageously took the first step. As I waited my turn in the shower, I could hear the cool refreshing water running in the bathroom and I looked forward to the relief the cool water against my skin would bring.

As Sam left the bathroom, anticipation overtook me and I quickly took her place in the shower. The feelings of fatigue from the sweltering heat and the party we hosted earlier quickly left me as I stood there in the shower and allowed the cool water to roll down my face.

When I got out of the shower I felt like a new man. I felt clean. I felt renewed. I felt rejuvenated. I felt that the relief the shower provided gave me strength that I didn’t have prior to being soothed by the cleansing properties of the water. A great parallel can be drawn between the refreshing I experienced with my shower to the washing of water by the Word of God.

God’s Word Refreshes

God’s Word is spoken of metaphorically as having the same refreshing properties of water in several places in the bible. When we bath our spirits with the Word of God we are renewed. We are rejuvenated. We are refreshed. God’s Word can give us the refreshment we need when we are facing challenges in life that are draining us of our strength.

As with my experience last Sunday afternoon, it would have been easy just to lay there on the couch, overheated and struggling to move. But once I made the effort to get up off the couch and get to the shower, the refreshment I received from the cool water in the shower renewed my strength. If you’re feeling zapped by the issues of life, I encourage you to shower your spirit with the water of the Word of God. Bathe yourself in the truth. God’s Word is truth, not your circumstances.

The cool water of God’s Word will give you the strength you need to see you through your circumstances, whatever they may be. No matter how difficult it may be, spend some time in prayer and in fellowship with God through His Word and allow the cool, refreshing water of the Word of God to renew your mind and strengthen your resolve to take your place as the world overcomer you were created to be.
