Characteristics of a Good Church: Serving Your Community

Serving your community should be a hallmark of your local church. Your church should be known in the neighborhood. It should be more than just a pretty building on the corner. What better opportunity to witness for Christ than to get out, canvas the neighborhood, see if there are any needs and help facilitate meeting those needs.

Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Mormon church are well versed at canvassing the neighborhood. We as the local church should be doing the same. We have such a great opportunity to serve our community. There may be someone who is sick living right next door to the church who isn’t involved in the Meals on Wheels Program that we can serve. There may be a neighbor who has lost their job. Knock on the door and find out of we can pray with them and help to meet their need.

The church should be about meeting the needs of the people. That’s what Jesus was about. We should be following in His footsteps but we can’t do that unless we reach out to people who may never set foot in our church, and find out what the needs are. Serving our community is a great opportunity that the church may be missing out on.
