Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
King James Version (KJV)
I don’t like to be misunderstood. It hurts even more when I take the time to convey a message in the best way I know how but still am misunderstood. The bible has a lot to say about wisdom and understanding. We serve a God who loves us. He has given us His Word to live by, but we will not be able to live in a way that pleases Him, nor can we be successful witnesses for Him here on earth unless we understand what He said and how to apply what He said appropriately to our lives.

To begin to understand God, we must first understand His intentions toward us. We must spend time with Him. We must begin to learn of Him and His ways, before true understanding can emerge. Gaining the meaning behind His words, is the path to getting to know God.
Before I became a Christian, I used to hear Christians say that God desired a people that will praise Him. This never sat well with me. It irked me that a God who supposedly created the universe was so insecure in Himself that He needed mere humans to praise Him and tell Him how great He was.
I thought God had the biggest ego ever! But when I became a Christian and started spending time with Him and in His Word, understanding came. I understood that it’s praise that moves the hand of God. By spending time with Him I was able to see that He loved me and wanted to be a Father to me.
But in order for Him to do that…in order for Him to show Himself mighty in my life the way He wanted to, I had to praise Him. He didn’t need me to be who He was, but I needed Him to be who I was created to be.
Time spent with God breeds understanding
It took more than me reading the bible about how God wanted me to praise Him for me to gain understanding of this concept. It took a relationship between me and Him and it took me spending time with Him in order for me to see His motive where praising Him was concerned.
I encourage you to spend some quality time with God. Seek understanding. Ask God to help you to see the meaning behind His words. Only then will you be able to absorb God’s Word the way it was intended to be absorbed.
