Prayer: The Prayer of Agreement – Matthew 18:19-20

Types of Prayer: The Prayer of Agreement - Matthew 18:19-20

Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in Heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 18:19-20 – KJV

The Prayer of Agreement is praying with another believer (or believers) for something specific. All parties involved in the prayer must agree with the prayer and with the desired outcome of the prayer. A husband and wife going before God and making a request is a primary example of the Prayer of Agreement.

It might seem obvious, but the most important aspect of this kind of prayer is that all parties included in the prayer must agree. It’s important to spend time discussing what you’re praying for and what results you expect to achieve with your prayer partner before praying.

It’s important to spend time discussing what you’re praying for and what results you expect to achieve with your prayer partner before praying.

An example of the Prayer of Agreement gone wrong would be a husband and wife coming together in prayer to resolve a situation with their home, which is in foreclosure. If the husband is praying for God to give them the money they need to get their home out of foreclosure while the wife is praying that the bank take the home without subjecting them to any further financial obligation, they are not in agreement and this prayer can’t work.

A good example of the Prayer of Agreement for the above situation would be the husband and wife discussing how they want the situation with their home resolved (for instance, praying for a financial blessing to get their home out of foreclosure), and then praying the following prayer together:

Father, we see in Your Word that You supply all our need according to Your riches in glory. We are coming to you in agreement that our financial need of (be specific) to get our home out of foreclosure is met. We establish this agreement in Jesus Name, Amen. The word Amen simply means “So be it”. It means that as far as we are concerned the matter is closed and we thank God for the answer to our prayer.

Write out a Prayer Contract

It’s also a good idea to write your agreement down on paper. It’s not that you need a paper contract with God. It’s more for the sake of you and your prayer partner. An agreement in writing gives you something tangible to look at to help stabilize you when doubt tries to come in and shake your faith. Doubt can rob you of the answer to your prayer. Once your prayer of agreement has been established, stand strong in your faith and in time, you will see the answer to your prayer.
