The Thief Comes To Steal, Kill and Destroy

The thief spoken of in the bible is our adversary, Satan. He’s a thief. The biblical description of the thief is pretty accurate. He kills, steals and destroys. Other descriptors that come to mine are someone who steals by deception. Someone who lies in wait of unsuspecting prey. Someone who uses trickery to take what does not belong to him.

faith comes by hearing

It’s incumbent upon us as Christians to use some wisdom in “locking our doors” so that the thief will have a difficult time stealing what doesn’t belong to him.

God gave us life. Life belongs to us. John 10:10 says that Jesus came that we might have life and have it more abundantly. So if this is the case, why does a large pizza cost $10.00 while fruits, vegetables and anything related to a healthy lifestyle cost and arm and a leg? Let me explain.

The Thief Is Stealing Our Health

The United States is the fattest country on the planet. The health risks we face because of the dietary choices we make are through the roof. Yet, quite a few who would love to better their eating habits by incorporating fruits, vegetables and other staples into their diets can’t afford to.

Settling for fast food options that may taste good but contain virtually no nutritional value, we find ourselves growing larger and larger. We resign ourselves to the fact that it’s easier to buy a larger pant size than to think creatively to improve our diets, which will impact our health.

I know it kinda sounds like I’m on a soapbox here, and I apologize for that. It probably doesn’t help that my wife and I watched the documentary Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead last night. As I watched the film, I kept waiting for the bomb to drop. I kept waiting for the complicated reason why we as a country have not done something about the situation we find ourselves in health wise. I reasoned within myself that the solution can’t be this simple.

But then the film showed how much it costs per day to change the typical diet and begin a regiment of eating (or juicing) healthier foods. $14.00 per day, per person and $28.00 per day per person if you choose to eat organic fruits and vegetables. That’s a lot of money for most people. But in the long run, if we count the ill effects of our health, our shortened life span, our pending mental illness, excessive doctor and hospital visits, higher insurance costs and much more, is $14.00 per day really more expensive?

I really don’t want to over spiritualize life, but there is only one source of death. There is no death in God. Would it be reasonable to think that Satan would love to silence God’s people by taking as many of us out as possible? Wouldn’t it also be reasonable to think that our enemy would attempt to trick God’s people into committing dietary suicide by making the junk food that we consume ultra-tasty and ultra-easy to gain access to and the healthier foods that would benefit us and sustain our lives more difficult to obtain? Could there be a spiritual reason why I can get a 5 gallon jug of sweet tea that’s loaded with sugar for next to nothing but have to pay an arm and a leg for the healthy alternative of fresh squeezed fruit juice?

Is He Stealing, or Are We Giving Our Lives Away?

The thief we’re facing is very cunning. But the people of God have wisdom at their disposal. Our diets are killing us. The thief comes to kill. I think there might just be a connection there. There’s no way I can suggest to you what to eat or to change your eating habits. However, I pray the best for you, your family and your loved ones. If you’re a Christian, wherever you are, you’re my brother or sister and I love you. We are family and I want the best for my family. I encourage you to seek God where your eating habits are concerned. I encourage you to educate yourself (if education is necessary) about the fuel that you’re putting into your body. We are called to be examples of Christ in every area.

I don’t know what your image if Christ is, but I have a difficult time imagining Jesus with a beer belly. I have a hard time imagining Jesus with love handles. I have a hard time imagining a 400 lbs. Jesus. I encourage you to begin to be the example of Jesus both inwardly and outwardly in all that you do, in all that you say, and in all that you eat.
