Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed on Him, “If you continue in my Word, then you are my disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” John 8:31-32. I’d like to focus on a few words in the above verse. CONTINUE….THEN….INDEED….KNOW….and MAKE. At face value these few words might seem insignificant but let’s examine the scripture a bit closer.
CONTINUE – Jesus said, if you continue. This tells me that those Jews who believed on him had started studying, learning, following and believing His Word. If they had never started, there would be no need for Him to say “if you continue”.
Millions of Christians hear the truth every Sunday but they aren’t necessarily disciples indeed. In order to become a disciple indeed you must continue in His Word.
THEN – Then is a bridge word. Whatever happens after the word “then” will be the result of conditions met before the word “then”
INDEED – Shows emphasis indicating, Wow, you really are a true disciple, as opposed to a casual or passive disciple.
KNOW – Knowing the truth is the result of becoming a disciple indeed.
MAKE – Make means you were virtually forced into something ex: “to make a child do something”. In this instance, the truth that was obtained will force you into freedom. Take note…the truth didn’t give you freedom, nor did it set you free. It MADE you free. When you know the truth, freedom is the only option.
The key to becoming a disciple indeed is continuing in His Word. The end result of becoming a disciple indeed is freedom. Notice the distinction. Jesus never said that those Jews who believed on Him weren’t disciples.
Millions of Christians are disciples, but they aren’t necessarily disciples indeed. It’s not enough to hear His Word alone. It’s not enough to speak it alone. It’s not enough to think about it alone although these 3 ingredients are necessary to start down the road to becoming a disciple indeed.
Water, sugar and flour are all ingredients of a cake, however individually, they don’t make up a cake. You will only have a cake if you mix the ingredients together and put them in the oven to bake. When the baking process is done, you will have a delicious cake.
Continuing in His Word – The Hallmark of a Disciple Indeed
Continuing in God’s Word mixes a combination of reading, hearing, speaking, and thinking about His Word. The bible calls these meditating in His Word. Meditation in God’s Word produces disciples indeed.
Do you want to be a passive disciple, or a disciple indeed? Keep in mind that in John 8:31 Jesus was already talking to Jews who believed on Him. He wasn’t giving a revelation to people who had never heard His Word before.
He was trying to show them how they could become disciples indeed. He wanted to show them how they could take their discipleship to a new level. I encourage you to spend time in God’s Word. Become a disciple indeed and allow the truth of God’s Word to make you free.
