Spiritual matters have traditionally been relegated to mysterious goings on that couldn’t be seen. This may be true to a degree, however the results of spiritual responses to issues that we have to deal with in the 3 dimensional material world can definitely be seen.
With the New Year upon us, many of us have New Year’s resolutions and things that we want to work toward changing in our lives. When asked what my New Year’s resolution was this morning over breakfast, my answer had to do with incorporating more spiritual responses into my life as opposed to responding to life’s issues out of my emotions.
The War Room
My wife has been off from work for 2 weeks during this holiday season. Over the past two weeks we were able to get caught up on our movie watching. One of the movies we finally got a chance to see was War Room. I agree with everyone who recommended it that it was a great movie.
The key to strong spiritual responses to the challenges of life is submitting yourself, your mind, you will, and your emotions to God.
However the one scene that has stuck out in my mind more than any other from the movie had to do with an elderly woman and a younger woman being robbed at knife point. As the attacker jumped from the shadows demanding money from the women, the younger woman’s reaction was terror. She appeared to be ready to comply with any and every demand from the thief.
However, the elder woman looked her attacker in the eye and refused to give in to his demands. The robber looked back at the elderly lady with a puzzled look on his face only to hear her say, “I command you in the name of Jesus to put down that knife”. The next scene shows the robber turning and running away in terror from the women.
After the scene, my wife turned to me and said with a sarcastic tone, “Yeh, right”. We both continued watching the movie, but that scene has stuck with me for the past few days.
What we saw in the movie was someone responding to a practical problem with a spiritual response. It would be easy to dismiss this scene in the movie as being simply an impractical scene from a movie that’s not applicable to real life, but we actually have biblical precedence for resisting the devil in real life as the actress did in the movie in James 4:7.
Making spiritual responses our First Responses
So much of how we respond to the issues of life have to do with how we’ve been conditioned to respond. We can even be conditioned to respond in fear to certain acts and events. My goal in the coming year is to meditate in God’s Word to the degree that my responses to life’s challenges are spiritual in nature as opposed to emotionally based.
When you think about it, there is no response to any issue of life that is more correct than a spiritually based response. For instance, in the scene from the movie, as scary as it may seem, what response could possibly be stronger than a response rooted in God’s Word?
The key to strong spiritual responses to the challenges of life is submitting yourself, your mind, your will, and your emotions to God. Submission is the reliance on Him for your providence, your support and for your protection. Once you’ve submitted to God, the bible tells us that if we resist the devil, he will flee from us. The Greek rendering of the word “flee” means to run from in terror.
The Power that lies within
The bible tells us that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). As Christians, we are able to give spiritual responses to what appear to be life threatening situations because of the power of God that lives within us.
Please don’t dilute yourself into thinking that it’s you that causes the enemy to turn tails and run in terror. It’s the power of the living God who always causes us to triumph that he’s afraid of.
I’d like to encourage you to spend some time in God’s Word and come to the realization of the power that lives on the inside of you. The bible tells us that no weapon formed against us shall prosper Isaiah 54:17. The next time the enemy attempts to rush in like a flood lift up the standard of God’s Word against him and show him that God plus you are a majority in any of life’s situations.
