Prayer of Consecration – The “If It Be Thy Will” Prayer

Prayer of ConsecrationToday I’d like to talk briefly about the Prayer of Consecration or, the “If It Be Thy Will” prayer.  Jesus prayed the Prayer of Consecration in Matthew 26:36-46 right before He went to the Cross. In this prayer, Jesus was consecrating himself (setting Himself apart) to do the Will of God regardless of His personal feelings or desires. The Prayer of Consecration is the only prayer in which we use the term “If It Be Thy will”. In the Prayer of Consecration, we have to use the term “if it be thy will” because the will of God isn’t clearly revealed to us in scripture. An example of this would be God leading you to move in order to evangelize. You may know that God is calling you to make a move, but you may not know exactly where to go at the time.

“Lord I acknowledge the call you’ve placed on my life to become an Evangelist. I’m prepared to go where you want me to go and to minister as you would have me minister. If it be thy will for me to go to Australia, I’m willing to go. Not my will Father, but your will be done.

So the appropriate prayer in this instance would be, “Lord I acknowledge the call you’ve placed on my life to become an Evangelist. I’m prepared to go where you want me to go and to minister as you would have me minister. If it be thy will for me to go to Africa, I’m willing to go. If it be thy will for me to go to China, I’m willing to go. If it be thy will for me to go to Australia, I’m willing to go. Not my will Father, but your will be done.

When to use the Prayer of Consecration

The Prayer of Consecration is the only prayer in which “If it be thy will” is used because you’re not clear what His will is for you under the circumstances. A good way of knowing if it’s right to use this prayer is to ask yourself, “Do I know what God says about this situation”. If you know the will of God in any given situation, then one of the other Types of Prayer would be more appropriate to use instead of the Prayer of Consecration.
