Faith that Fluctuates – Plugging the Holes in Your Faith Tank

faith tank

Faith levels, just as your feelings and emotions change on a daily basis. Have you ever gotten out of bed on a bright sunshiny morning feeling great! The air may be crisp and clear, the birds may be singing and all seems right with the world.

On mornings like these it seems like you can take on the world. Even when facing spiritual problems or challenges, you seem to exude faith in God and in His word.

You go throughout the day casting all your care and concern on God without giving them a second thought.

On these mornings, even dealing with difficult people brings a smile to your face. Nothing anyone says or does seems to have an adverse affect on you.

You spend the day exhibiting the Fruit of the Spirit and you interact with co-workers on the job and family at home with ease.

And then there are those other days. Days when you struggle to get out of bed. Days when it’s cold and rainy outside.

To maintain any sense of stability in our spiritual lives, we must be aware of possible holes in our faith tank. If we go through life unaware of how these holes in our faith tanks affect us, we will be stuck on a spiritual rollercoaster for the rest of our lives.

Days when not one single bird is in sight. Days when every interaction is a struggle. On days like these you feel super vulnerable and on edge.

You seem to worry about everything and you feel overcome with every spiritual attack that comes your way. On these days you may feel like God is nowhere to be found in your life.

Some may even entertain thoughts of suicide, feeling that they just can’t take another disappointment in their life.

Have you ever wondered how you can feel so spiritually strong on one day then on the very next day feel so defeated?

It may be because you have a hole in your faith tank. Our environment, circumstances and the people we interact with can become holes in our faith tanks and drain us of our faith if we’re not careful.

To maintain any sense of stability in our spiritual lives, we must be aware of possible holes in our faith tank. If we go through life unaware of how these holes in our faith tanks affect us, we will be stuck on a spiritual rollercoaster for the rest of our lives.

Our Faith in God varies daily based on the level of faith in our tanks

Faith is like fuel in the tank of a car. The amount of fuel in your tank varies from day to day. On some days when your tank is full, you can drive hundreds of miles.

On other days, your tank might be almost empty and you find yourself travelling on fumes.

Many factors affect our faith level. It’s helpful for us to (a) be aware that our level of faith varies from day to day, and (b) be aware of the many sources of leaks that may affect our faith level.

Some sources of leaks in our faith tanks:

1 – Weather

2 – Chemical Imbalances

3 – Our Environment

4 – Negative People

5 – Poor Diet

6 – Lack of sleep

7 – Lack of time spent in God’s Word

This is by no means an all-inclusive list. These are just a few of the factors that can affect our bodies and our minds and drain the faith out of our lives.

Life can drain our faith tank

On her way to work, Sue Smith fought to see the cars in front of her through her smeared windshield. The city has received 6 inches of rain in the last 24hrs which breaks the precipitation record for the year.

Her eyes hurt from fatigue. Sue’s mind began to drift and she wondered how she could break the news to her 9 year old daughter Josephine about returning their Chihuahua, Egore to the pet shop.

Sue had no idea that the steady barking of the dog would cause night after night of sleeplessness.

Usually, Sue likes to get to work early to study the bible, but caring for the new puppy throughout the night has caused her to run late for work every day for the past month.

By the time she gets Josephine ready for school, and gets dressed, there hasn’t even been time for breakfast lately.

The story above sounds very typical of the challenges some of us face on a daily basis. However, given the 4 holes in Sue’s faith tank (weather, lack of sleep, poor diet, lack of time spent in Gods Word), can you see how it could be hard for Sue to operate in strong faith if she came under sudden attack by the enemy?

Plugging the Holes in Your Faith Tank

Now that you are aware that holes in your faith tank can drain you of your faith, it’s time to identify what holes you have in your tank and plug them up.

Your enemy knows your weaknesses. He knows how to come at you to cause you to become weak and ultimately defeat you.

Do your part. Don’t give Him a platform to work from. Take an inventory of your life. Identify the people, places and things that have been draining you of your faith and get rid of them.

Plug up the faith draining holes in your life and make sure that your faith tank is always full.
