Developing Your God-Given Talents and Abilities

Developing the abilities that you have hidden within you on a daily basis means more than simply becoming better at something you’re gifted in. Developing your talents means that you become a better and more skilled teammate within the Body of Christ.

Becoming the Best of the Best

In the realm of professional basketball, each and every player has attained a higher level of skill than the average player. Every “professional” has skills that far surpass what the average basketball player has to offer. But within the professional level, there are players that hold even greater skills than the average professional players. Each of these top tier players has taken the time to hone the skills that are God-given and have taken them to an even higher level.

These upper echelon players have shots, moves, and characteristics that they are known for exclusively. When it comes to unstoppable shots, no shot compares to the Sky Hook, made famous by Kareem Abdul Jabbar. When it comes to driving through the lane and beating opponents off the dribble, Tony Parker is the best. When it comes to staying cool under pressure and making the game look effortless, the title goes to the Iceman, George Gervin. If you need long-range, sniper-like shooting, you can count on Reggie Miller to deliver. If you need someone to convert free throws under pressure, no one compares to Rick Barry. I could go on and on naming the unique talents and abilities that NBA All-Stars have contributed to their teams and the game of basketball throughout the years.

Just as there are All-Stars in the game of basketball, I believe there are All-Stars within the Body of Christ to whom God has given special gifts. Some of us have the ability to reach children on a level that the average person can’t. Some of us can comfort and show compassion to others that is amazing. Some of us have an ability to encourage others that is unique and one of a kind.

Make developing the skills God has given you a priority. Growing up in Michigan, Magic Johnson used to get up early and shovel snow off the court to practice his skills before school every day. This type of dedication paid off later in life as he grew to become a Hall of Fame player in the NBA.

Sometimes in the challenges that we face each day, we can become focused on our own situations and circumstances. It’s easy to find ourselves sitting on the proverbial “side of the road” waiting for answered prayer, for the healing of our bodies, or for our children to straighten up and fly right. Sometimes developing the special skills and talents God has given us takes a back seat to life itself. I want to encourage you to spend time developing the talent hidden within you every single day. Find out what gift God has placed within you and use every moment and every situation to develop that gift.

As you spend time developing your gift, you will become an invaluable All-Star member of team B.O.C. (Body of Christ). And as we put our unique talents together and form one team of All-Stars, we will form an unstoppable force as we encompass the world being used of God to bless those in every nation.
