Bible trivia proved to be a welcome addition on one of our recent road trips. Keeping kids engaged and connected with the family these days is becoming more of a challenge. When cell phones, iPods, mp3 players and the many other hand held electronic devices came along, keeping the full attention of our children became much more difficult.
My wife and I have become increasingly tired of competing with electronic devices for our kid’s attention. This problem came to a head this year during spring break. On one particular spring break road trip, we set out to hike up to the Hollywood sign.
Let’s make every effort to help our kids develop spiritually and intellectually by using the precious time we spend with them in an engaging and spiritually nourishing way.
Hollywood is approximately 40 minutes away from where we live. About half way into the drive, I asked Jordan how many wise men came to see Jesus in the manger. This one question began an impromptu game of bible trivia that lasted all the way to Hollywood.
The more bible trivia questions I came up with to stump Jordan, the more questions he came up with to stump me. During our bible trivia game, he didn’t pick up his electronic device once. In fact, in the spirit of competition, his brother got involved and they turned our bible trivia game into a head to head challenge to see who could answer the most questions correctly.
After our hike, we returned to the car and before we could pull out of the parking lot the bible trivia game was on again. At this point, Sam and I knew that we had stumbled upon something that would drastically change our future road trips.
Real conversation with one another….what an interesting concept! Our bible trivia game not only kept the kids engaged but we learned bible facts from sharing our knowledge of the bible with one another. I can hardly wait for our next road trip. One addition we’re planning to make to our bible trivia game is to make the kids find the scriptures related to the bible trivia questions.
Keeping your children engaged through Bible Trivia
If you’re a parent and you’re looking for ways to re-engage with your children, I encourage you to give the bible trivia game a try. If your kids aren’t strong in bible trivia, use this trivia premise and talk about current events or anything else you think your kids may be somewhat knowledgeable and interested in.
As parents, it’s imperative that we win back the attention of our children and cultivate ways that they can enjoy the time we spend with them. Our window of opportunity to influence our children closes very quickly. Let’s make every effort to help our kids develop spiritually and intellectually by using the precious time we spend with them in an engaging and spiritually nourishing way.
